It seems like Andrew Wiggins being traded to the Los Angeles Lakers this offseason is a long shot.
Lakers insider Jovan Buha said Monday during a question-and-answer session, "I don't know if Wiggins at this point is looking realistic" given what the Miami Heat are asking for in return.
Buha previously reported that Miami was looking for a trade package of Dalton Knecht, Rui Hachimura and a first-round draft pick if it was going to trade Wiggins to the Purple and Gold.
That seems like a lot on the surface, although Los Angeles was previously willing to include Knecht and a future first-round pick in the deal for Mark Williams last season that was eventually rescinded. And it is also in win-now mode with LeBron James and Luka Dončić on the roster, so adding a veteran may seem intriguing.
Still, the front office may prioritize building around Dončić in the future since James turns 41 years old during the upcoming season and is entering the final campaign on his current contract since he exercised his player option.
If that is the case, giving up a future first-round draft pick for a solid-but-unspectacular player like Wiggins who might not be the difference between a championship and early playoff exit in the daunting Western Conference may not be as intriguing.
The Lakers could use another impact player on the wing after they at least partially addressed concerns about the frontcourt by adding Deandre Ayton.
Wiggins has a resume that includes the 2014-15 Rookie of the Year, a championship with the Golden State Warriors and an All-Star Game nod during the 2021-22 campaign. He hit 37.4 percent of his three-pointers last season and is someone who could take advantage of the spacing that comes with playing alongside James and Dončić.
Miami may see him as more expendable as well after it acquired Norman Powell in a three-team trade that included the Utah Jazz and Los Angeles Clippers on Monday, per ESPN's Shams Charania.
Perhaps the Lakers or another suitor could talk the Heat down on their price given that reality, although all indications are Wiggins likely isn't heading to the Purple and Gold via a trade this offseason.
